UPDATE: Source: France’s Societe Generale closes Russian diplomats’ accounts
(Adds details in fourth paragraph)
PARIS, Jun 10 (PRIME) -- French bank Societe Generale has started to close accounts of Russian diplomats without explaining the reasons, a diplomatic source told PRIME on Friday.
“While deputies of the National Assembly and the Senate of France vote for repeal of sanctions against Russia, French bank Societe Generale closes accounts of Russian diplomats, not just common Russian people, seemingly afraid of measures by the U.S.,” the source said.
He said that some Russian UNESCO employees faced closing of accounts with the bank.
Societe Generale declined to comment. A spokesman for France’s Foreign Ministry Alexandre Giorgini said that the ministry will check whether the information is true.
In June 2015, French law enforcement authorities blocked accounts of Russian companies in France’s affiliate of VTB in order to comply with a decision by the Hague District Court under a case against the Russian government by shareholders of defunct oil company Yukos.
A Paris court later ruled that the account block was unlawful.
